Just melt already, I can’t handle this any longer!!
… The home schooling, that is. Not the snow and ice.
It’s no secret that England really doesn’t know how to ‘winter’. First sign of snow and the country grinds to a shivering halt. And in the case of last week, this includes the school of a student we currently care for. They’ve been forced to close due to the impossible and unsafe driving and walking conditions in the surrounding area. Which is fine. I get it, and I applaud them for putting safety first.
What I don’t applaud, is thinking I am the right person to be teaching her scales, proportions, metrics, imperial measurements and conversions. Especially ones with decimal points. I mean, cheers for the vote of confidence guys … but you got the wrong girl. Well, sort of. I can do it and get the right answers – on a calculator. I just can’t teach her how to do it on paper using long multiplication and long division.
(There’s a reason why Pete normally helps this girl with her maths homework, while I just chill out in the corner, helping my 6 year old son do his homework. I can sound a lot wiser and knowledgeable when faced with questions like ‘which line is the longest?’ 😂)
I definitely have a new-found appreciation for parents and carers who home schooled their kids during lockdown. And I have EXTRA appreciation for those with ME and other chronic illnesses who also had to do it. After doing it for one week, I’ve had either a headache or a full-on migraine after every maths lesson. Probably from the force of which I’ve been trying to concentrate through the intense brain fog.
The school are hoping to reopen on Monday. This is because they rather optimistically thought the snow and ice would melt this weekend. It’s now Saturday evening. And it looks like this (see pic background). So unless I’ve missed something, and I’m going to be drinking pina coladas in tropical Jamaica-like sunshine tomorrow … then it’s fair to say my home schooling trauma will continue on Monday.
I can feel my little brain cells short-circuiting already. Help!
… Umm, Dry January doesn’t apply to people who’s kids haven’t gone back to school yet, right?! 😜
